The brief for this project was to take three books by a Nobel Laureate, redesign their covers and place all three of these books within a graphic vehicle. The whole project conveys a narrative based around the themes of the books.
I chose Ernest Hemingway and redesigned three of his books. My theme for this project was water and I chose the books ‘The Old Man and the Sea’, ‘Across the River and into the Trees’ and ‘Islands in the Stream’.
To create the concept of water within the vehicle, I decided that I wanted to create what would be a physical representation of a bathymetric map of the bottom of the ocean bed. I did this by laser cutting five different layers of blue reflective acrylic and placing them within a clear acrylic box. This way the reader would see their own reflection in the sea bed much like they would if they looked into water. I also clad the entire vehicle within a vinyl cut that gives the impression of the crests of waves on the top of the water with the name of the book series on the lid as well.
Here are the books covers I created for the project. As you can see, I have replicated the exact same pattern that I created on the bottom of the vehicle, on the covers of the books. This time I created the pattern using layered sheets of 22gsm matte paper. By doing this is creates the image that the books are in fact transparent as you can still see the pattern of the sea bed below them. Therefore completing the theme of the books in fact being the water.
