While visiting New Zealand for the year on my worldwide travels, I managed to secure a job at Bayleys Canterbury, a property management company in Christchurch as a paternity cover. I was thrilled to have got the job as I thought moving to a new city on the other side of the world would make it difficult to find a design job, but I was also delighted when my design for the Spring Auction Campaign for 2026 was picked up by the managing director and chosen to be run state-wide on a plethora of different outputs such as billboards, newspapers and social media.
This was an opportunity I grabbed with both hands and gained some experience with new skills and designing for an entirely new sector, in a brand new market on the other side of the world.
With AI tools reshaping the way we do our work, I took this chance to properly learn how to generate images that can be used as the hero of a campaign. This was the main learning curve of the project and took time and effort to perfect this new way of bringing a campaign to life. I'm very pleased with the results and see how this aspect of my work can open up so many other creative avenues.
Campaign
Hero
Here is the hero of the campaign. It is constructed using the campaign imagery which I've discussed the development of below but also using the existing Bayleys brand. Due to Bayleys being a well established legacy brand in New Zealand, there is not much wiggle room for development and pushing the boundaries.`
I chose to develop a route that used large bold typography centering round a frame that showed the front door of a Kiwi home. Showing the customers the type of home they might be able to buy. At the early stage of the process I was concerned with finding the right colours that harmonise with the current brand and generating imagery that is both realistic but stylised for the luxurious market Bayleys is keen to be involved in.
Later on and after the imagery had been finalised, it was time to develop the motion graphics to make the campaign stand out even more across socials and also to develop some sound to go with these videos. The typographic style is simple but effective, creating a reward for the viewer and keeping them engaged by staggering the key information throughout the video while still maintaining the visual hierarchy.
Below is the campaign hero and the result of all the careful thought and design iteration that came before. There has been numerous different mediums and formats to design for and some of these can be seen further down the page.
It was a pleasure working on this campaign and a really proud moment seeing my work out everywhere on the other side of the planet.
AI Image
Generation
To develop my skills on image generation and understanding AI workflows, I have begun to use Weavy AI which is a nodal AI software. After quite a lot of time getting to grips with these new workflows, I am really pleased with the output and have realised a few things from these expermients.
Below are my AI image generations which form the hero to the campaign along with the typography that comes later.
1.
AI skills are not here to replace our job and all of the workflows we currently use, it can be best optimised to lift the creative even further, much animating a static post can bring things to life, AI can add a new dimension that wasn't possible before.
2.
When budgets are tight, an ability to use AI softwares to elevate work can be an extremely handy skill to have in your locker. Now we can achieve excellent design with little resources, just with the know how.
3.
From my experiments I am actually quite excited by the creative opportunities and ideas that are possible now. Art Direction is still as important as it always was because the AI generator doesn't know taste and style, it still needs a person to tell it what to generate and then use it correctly in the real world.
Below is a screenshot of my Weavy AI workflow where you can see me getting to grips with the new software and a new way of thinking.
